How To Travel With A Wedding Dress

It’s no secret that a destination wedding requires plenty of logistical planning. Between booking your picture perfect wedding location, helping coordinate travel with loved ones, and designing your dream day with your vendors, transporting your wedding dress, and the logistics of it may slip your mind.

One of the most common questions is “How do I safely take my wedding dress on an airplane?”

It’s absolutely possible to fly with your wedding dress, but you will need to plan ahead. The best plan is to take your dress on the plane as a carry-on. This way, it doesn’t leave your sight while traveling. Your gown should never be added to your checked baggage, and you should only consider taking it on an airplane with you in a garment bag that can’t be seen through.

If the dress is small enough, you can pack it in your carry-on bag, but make sure to add a bright ribbon or a tag so you can easily detect and differentiate the dress.

While most carry-on bags are to be stored in overhead compartments, some airplanes may have additional closet space that can be used. Some aircrafts have larger “coat closets” in the first-class cabin area that can often be used for bridal gown storage. While closet space is not guaranteed, once onboard the aircraft it’s best to check with the flight attendants to see if they can accommodate a wedding dress.

If you’re interested in pursuing this option, you can call ahead to double-check if your plane will have this extra space available. You can also chat with customer service reps or flight attendants when you arrive at the airport, for extra help.

Lastly, connect with your wedding coordinator at your destination wedding venue and make sure that steaming services are available for your wedding dress, once you arrive to the location.

Have a dreamy destination wedding!
